I believe in education and I believe in standards however, I rebel against any form of injustice. And injustice to me looks like inequitable laws that seek to control and suppress that of another. In essence, an entity seeking to be an authority over that which it does not understand or accept. The cosmetology “system” has its roots in Eurocentric standards not based on, or inclusive of our texture, our history, our cultural expression or our very existence.
.....
We as African descendants need to understand that we are R A R E and that “systems” were not set up by us, nor intended to include us! Therefore we must set our own standards. Because conformity is a tactic that seeks to keep you from standing out and being authentically you. ....
....
Again I believe in education, but it must be relevant and in my case in 2003 in the state of Arizona you had to have a cosmetology license to do natural hair styling however, they did not teach, nor test on the artistry or techniques of braiding, locking, and twisting......but I challenged them and WON! In 2013 Rare Essence Academy was birthed out of a need to share proper techniques as well as healthy hair practices for those who have a passion for natural hair.
....
What are your thoughts of natural hair stylist needing a cosmetology license? Do you think there should be specialty licenses that address cultural differences? Or should all stylist go to cosmo school? If so why? #rareessenceforever #essencechina #wesetthestandard #instituteforjustice #nonconformist #rebel #wemakehistory #leadersdontcomplaintheychangethings
